Oslo’s Philco Fiction take any sound they damn well please, throw it into the mix, and come out with something that sounds like nothing else. Most surprising of all is that each song is an instantly hummable pop confection, like a rare strain of a disease without a cure.

We have strains of Bjork, Prince, Regina Spektor, the xx, classic music, and things I can’t even figure out. My description may cause you to think the songs are slipshod, but that’s not the case at all. Their debut album Take It Personal is a brave exercise in diversity, one that careens from genre to genre like a BMW speeding down a highway. But each song is packaged ever so neatly.

Although these guys have the potential to go over the heads of a lot of people, you shouldn’t sleep on this band. This is one of the more surprisingly good records of the year.
